Tour of Iron Mountain Studio
Retreat for Artists, Photographers, and Writers

Iron Mountain Studio is best suited for one or two persons, or a couple. It is three floors with an open layout. The cost is 400 Euros per week.

When entering on the ground floor (American - 1st floor), the main room has a small window facing south and can be used for a studio for larger canvases or as writing area, as well as a cool retreat during the summer. A five-bulb halogen light fixture is used in this studio space. The walls are exposed stone 1 meter thick. A bathroom with shower is also located on this floor (The only door inside the house is the bathroom door).

On the first floor (American - 2nd floor) is an L-shaped room that is bedroom, library, and computer room. A movable screen separates the library-sitting room area from the bedroom area. In the bedroom area is a double bed that can also be separated into two single beds.

On the second floor (American - 3rd floor) is the kitchenette, a fireplace, and a futon couch. there is a north facing skylight over the stairwell, and two balconies, one facing west, one facing south both looking out over the village. The center of this area is open and can be used by artists or writers as a studio area.

Iron Mountain Studio is normally available for three seasons a year, March through October. For use from November through February see the paragraph below the following list. In the house you will find:

• Full-size French easel for your use while staying at the studio (paints and brushes are not supplied). They are some other easels that may be available for use as well, please check with us about availability.
• Writing/drawing table/desk and an iMac computer. The computer has Microsoft Word and Adobe PhotoShop CS3 installed. Contact us for a complete list of programs on the computer.
• Internet is available for free at the village library at specific hours or you can use your cell phone for Internet service. UMTS or EDGE hi-speed Internet service through your cell phone works in Santu Lussurgiu.
• Due to the excellent location half way up the interior side of Montiferru there is no need for air conditioning during the summer. There is usually a breeze blowing over the mountain from the sea that keeps Santu Lussurgiu cool and mosquito free.
• We welcome writers and artists for periods of a week to a month or longer. The week normally begins on Saturday.

While the house is also available for use during November through February please understand the conditions that you may find during this time. In winter, there is usually little or no snow and it very rarely is below freezing, but both can occur. With no central heating in the house warmth occurs by using the fireplace, and it is very important to dress appropriately, since the house will never be as warm as one with central heating. This means wearing layers. This is the traditional winter heating for homes in Santu Lussurgiu. Supplemental heating of rooms in the house are done with portable electric heaters.

Meals are not included, but with the kitchenette you are able to cook your own meals. Santu Lussurgiu has 3 excellent restaurants, 2 pizzerias, 4 markets, 3 butcher shops featuring meats from local animals, a home-made pasta shop, and more. Twice a week there is also a farmers market in Market Square in the center of the village.
